What is POP ART?

People who are not familiar with pop art have seen its influence in one way or another; through fashion trends, products, current pop stars like Lady Gaga and of course advertising.

POP ART : a school of art that emerged in the United Kingdom in the 1950s and became prevalent in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1960s;

Lady Gaga Pop's Art Edge

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born March 28, 1986 better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American popsinger-songwriter.

Lady Gaga's bizarre exaggerated outfits are reminiscent of a pop style. Lady Gaga wore a "meat dress". Yes a dress made of meat, to an music awards show. Uhhhh, gross....

Lady Gaga recently ended her partnership with Target for donating money to a political candidate who has spoken out against gay marriage. The store was going to carry the deluxe edition of her newest album.

Pop Art Beginnings

Pop Art was one of the most influential art movements of the 2oth Century. It made its first appearance in London and New York over 50 years ago.

The movement grew quickly. Pop Art has humor and commercial qualities.

Pop art played a role in the revival of printmaking particularly in the U.S. in the 1960’s.

Five hardcore Pop Artists emerged from New York City. These five artists employed a hard commercial edge Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselman, James Rosenquist, and Clas Oldenberg

Soup Cans as Art?

Andy Warhol is of course the most famous and well known figure of pop art.

Warhol’s Marilynn Monroe prints and Campbell’s Soup cans are burned in most people’s consciousness and immediately recognizable images of pop art.

Warhol used commercial silk screening techniques to create identical mass produced items on canvas. In the 1960’s he produced Coca Cola bottles and sculptures of Brillo boxes.

Warhol died in New York after a gallbladder operation 1987. He was born in Pittsburgh and there is a museum in Pittsburgh dedicated to him today.

One well known pop artist from Britain Richard Hamilton is known as the father of the pop art movement in Britain. One of Hamilton’s well known works was his collage

Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?

Made in 1965 this Collage is one of the earliest definitive Pop works. This work has themes of photography, cinema, TV, advertising, comic strips, consumer products, and brand names.

Roy Lichtenstein was an American artist well known for his comic book prints. He created whimsical reproduction of works he admired such as Vincent Van Gogh’s Bedroom.

POP ART AND FASHION

In the 60’s Andy Warhol inspired a Campbell’s soup dress. These dresses were produced by Campbell's Soup as an effective advertising campaign when paper dresses were all the rage.

This A-line dress is printed with the Campbell's Soup red, black and white labels. At the back of the neckline is the original attached label that reads: "The Souper Dress/No Cleaning/ No Washing/ It's carefree fire resistant unless washed or cleaned/To refreshen, press lightly with warm iron/80% Cellulose, 20% Cotton".

The boutique clothing store emerged in the 1960s had a Pop influence.
Color played a big role with bright, bold color often splayed in geometric patterns.

Speaking of bold colors, Remember Jackie Kennedy’s bold pink suit?

Today Pop influences mainstream fashions like countless popular graphic t-shirts designs in any department store, As well as high end accessories and jewelry.

Fashion designer Tommy Hillfiger says pop influenced his bright color choices in some collections.

For example Thomas Sabo, a Germany-based sterling silver brand, has released its Spring/Summer 2011 collection and pop art is its muse. Drawing inspiration from celebrities such as Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson and Madonna, the collection is called Pop Now

POP ART AND COMMERCIALISM

Beginning in the 1950’s and 60’s, the original Pop Artists began to use innovative techniques to turn ordinary commercial imagery into catchy and popular art for the masses.

Advertisers love to use the word “POP”...Pop tarts, Pop Secret, Corn Pops, Pop Chips…

Pop Art influence is present in today’s commercials.

The Target bulls eye logo, and Target commercials strike me as very POP.

Also campy Old Navy commercials have pop themes as well.
