Animal Adoption-Children's Bedtime Story, Ruby The Cat Gets Adopted
67Ruby The Cat Gets Adopted
Jack was turning eight years old soon and all he wanted for his birthday was a pet.
Jack loved animals. He loved reading books about animals. He even liked to draw pictures of animals. He loved watching TV shows about animals.
Jack and his parents lived in a small but very nice house. He wondered would they have room for a pet?
At dinner that night Jack’s parents asked what he wanted for his birthday.
“Well” said Jack “I really, really, really want a pet”.
A pet? Jacks parents asked surprised. They knew Jack loved animals but they didn’t know he wanted a pet for his birthday.
Ruby is Happy At Her New Home
“Jack a pet is a lot of work. Do you think you could take care of a pet?” Said Jack’s father.
They need food, water, and a lot of time to be played with; also they need toys and a bed… And they need someone to clean up after them” Said his mother.
“Yes, Yes,” Jack said I would take care of it and play with it and give it food and water, I promise.
“We have to think about it Jack” his parents said” Because having a pet is a big responsibility”.
“Okay” said Jack and he finished his dinner and his homework then he lied in bed and dreamed of getting a pet for his birthday.
A few days later it was Jack’s birthday. He was so excited. His friends and family were coming over they were having ice cream and cake he was getting presents. And maybe a pet! He blew out the candles on his Birthday cake and closed his eyes really tight and made a wish.
He had fun at his party. He opened all his presents he got toys, books, and games but when all the presents were opened he still didn’t have the one thing he wished for …
Jack was sad.
“What’s wrong”? Asked Jack’s parents.
I like all my presents, but I thought I was getting a pet for my birthday” said Jack.
Jacks parents smiled and looked at each other. “Jack we do have one last present for you but it not wrapped up in a box, tomorrow we are going to look for a pet for you.”
Jack was so excited he jumped up and down and ran around the house, and then he hugged his parents.
Jack could barely sleep that night he woke up very early and got dressed and went to have breakfast. His mother gave him juice, eggs, and pancakes but Jack was too excited to eat much.
His parents said he they decided a dog was too much work, also they had a small house and a small yard, but he could still pick a smaller pet like a cat, bunny, hamster, or gerbil.
Jack was a little disappointed but he loved all animals he was so happy to have any type of pet.
Off to the Shelter!
“Are we going to the pet store?” asked Jack. Sometimes Jack went to the mall with his parents and he saw animals playing in the window of the pet store.
“We could go to the pet store” said his parents “But there is a shelter down the street that has a lot of animals that need homes.”
“When people can’t take care of their pets anymore or someone finds a stray animal they go to the shelter. These animals really need good homes” said Jack’s mom.
“Okay I want to give an animal a good home, let’s go to the shelter” said Jack.
They drove to the shelter and went into the small brick building. It was a little loud in the shelter dogs were barking, and other animals were making noise. A nice woman at the front desk talked to his parents.
She showed them some bunnies, gerbils, guinea pigs and kittens and cats.
They all looked like nice animals to Jack. Some looked scared as they peered at Jack through the bars of their cage.
“We almost always can adopt the kittens and puppies but the older animals are harder to adopt” The woman from the shelter said sadly to Jack’s parents.
Just then Jack heard a soft meow. A small cat was looking at him and reaching its paws out of the cage trying to touch Jack. The cat was all different brown and orange colors and had big green eyes. Jack reached his fingers in the cage and petted the cats head, the cat purred loudly.
“Oh she a really sweet stray cat we found, She is probably only a year or so old” said the woman from the shelter “We named her Ruby, She just loves people. Do you want to take her in the play room?”
“Sure” said Jack. They went into a small room with a bench and some toys the woman carried the small cat in and placed her on the floor. Then quickly shut the door.
The cat stared at Jack and his parents then walked over and rubbed Jack’s leg and began to purr. Then the cat jumped on the bench and rubbed her head on Jack’s arm then licked his fingers Jack laughed “it tickles” he said to his parents.
“Cats have a rough tongue” said his mother “They use it to clean their fur.”
Jack petted the cat’s fur, it was very soft. The cat closed her eyes and purred louder.
“She likes you” said his father and smiled.
“I like her too” said Jack “Can we bring her home”
“Jack are you sure” said his mother “there are more animals we can look at, we just got here”
“Yes I want her” said Jack.
The woman from the shelter gave some papers to Jacks parents. Then she gave them a box with holes in it and a handle to take the cat named Ruby home in.
Bringing Ruby Home
On the way home they stopped at the pet supply store and bought all sorts of things. Jack had no idea that a pet needed so much stuff!
They bought food, litter, toys, a bed, a brush, and a litter box.
They got home and finally let Ruby the cat out of the box. Ruby peeked out from the box then jumped out she walked around and sniffed her new house.
“You know it is your cat now so if you want to give her a new name that’s OK.
Said Jacks parents
“I think Ruby is a good name” said Jack.
He knelt down and called “Ruby, Ruby come here” She ran over to Jack and rubbed him and purred “See she already knows her name” said Jack.
Jack and Ruby became good friends they played all the time. Jack fed her everyday and gave her clean water. He brushed Ruby’s fur. He helped his mom clean the house because Ruby was his cat and he needed to clean up after her. All that fur!
She liked to play with her toys. Jack would throw a ball and Ruby would chase it.
She liked to bat around or her toy mouse, and skid across the kitchen floor.
She did sleep a lot, and sometimes she snored! Ruby also liked to look out the window at birds in the trees. Sometimes she would curl up with Jack on his bed to keep warm and to sleep. She purred like a motor. Sometimes she would curl upon laundry right out of the clothes drier.
She would meow if she wanted to play or if she was hungry.
Jack loved having Ruby. He lay in bed at night and was so happy that his birthday wish came true.
Jack grew older and bigger; and so did Ruby.
Jack had many great birthdays & good presents...
But Ruby was always the best present he ever got.
Adoption is Best!
Please adopt or rescue your animals. Try looking on petfinder.com or visit a local animal shelter first instead of pet stores.

Lovely story!I had a cat named Callie, that I adopted from the animal shelter, that could be Ruby's twin!
Cute! I love new children's stories
Adorabe story, I like it!
What a sweet story, b4murray. I really enjoyed reading this and I am so pleased that you have such a wonderful young man as your son who loves Ruby so. this hub made my day as it is such a testament to what great friendship can be shared between a young person (and adults, too!) and a companion animal. I am very happy that you added the plea for people to to rescue and/or adopt from shelters..this is so needed in our society. I love cats, so this is that much more a treat to read! UP and BEAUTIFUL and AWESOME!
PS Ruby is beautiful!
